Blogger Bookclub: Techbitch by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza

Monday, 30 November 2015

Buy this book: Kindle/Paperback

It seems like forever since I wrote about a book on this blog, after trying (and failing) to keep my Bloggers Kindle Book Club alive, I found an existing and thriving blogger bookclub to join in the hopes that I will continue to read at least one book a month!

Imogen Tate, editor-in-chief of Glossy magazine, is a legend in the fashion world. But when she returns from a sabbatical to find her twenty-six-year-old former assistant, Eve Morton, behind her desk, she realises times are changing.Armed with a business degree, naked ambition and an iPhone, Eve announces she has been brought in to turn Imogen's beloved magazine into an app. With herself at the helm.In this terrifying new world, Imogen is almost invisible. In place of her team of dedicated staff is a constantly evolving line of twenty-something bloggers at their desks day and night ('Only losers need sleep!'), amateur snaps instead of elegant photo shoots, and a URL address in place of Imogen's glossy pages. But Imogen isn't ready to give up her hard-earned career without a fight. Where Eve has Twitter followers, Imogen has experience, talent and real relationships, and she's prepared to fight for the fashion world she knows and loves. Even if it means going to war with a ruthless Techbitch . . .

First Impressions: As soon as I read the title I thought this book would be right up my street, I'm a big lover of books that have some link to the digital age. Even better is that this book was about a fashion magazine, it reminded me very much of when I used to watch Ugly Betty, what a TV show that was!

During Reading: I am not lying when I say that I simply couldn't put this book down, I read this within two days because I couldn't bare to leave it on a cliffhanger. This book is very much 'The Devil Wears Prada' however the roles have been reversed, and in this case the seasoned fashion expert is being pushed out by the young technically minded newcomer. Imogen has her world turned completely upside down, not only by her ill health, but also by her ex-assistant, Eve, who is turning her beloved magazine into an app/website. To make matters worse Eve is a total nightmare techbitch who forces her team to work themselves to the bone, and ridicules them constantly. I don't know how the other girls felt when reading this book, but I know that I just wanted to reach into the pages and give Eve a sharp slap. The whole reason I couldn't stop reading this was because I was desperate for Eve to get her comeuppance. I won't spoil it for you, but the ending is definitely very satisfying if you are rooting for Imogen, which I honestly was throughout the entire book.

Final Verdict: I loved this book, so much so I can see myself picking it up in a few months and reading it all over again. If you love books based around the fashion world, or even around websites/blogs then you will love this book. It has the perfect amount of bitchiness to keep you frantically turning the pages, without getting entirely frustrated with it. I can even forgive the use of tech-slang such as YOLO in this book because the rest of it was just too good!

Rating: 5/5 Techbitch Slaps

Bloggers Kindle Book Club: Introducing December!

Monday, 1 December 2014

I am so excited to finally share with you the first book that the Blogger Kindle Book Club will reading, The Christmas Bake Off. Of course for the month of December our book would have to have a Christmas theme!

Here's what the Amazon page says about the book:

With Christmas just around the corner, the residents of Skipley village are gearing up for the annual bake off, and tensions are high.

Winning means a lot to everyone involved - talented cake-shop owner Katie dreams of baking stardom, Rachel wants to prove she's more than a stay-at-home mum, and John hopes his culinary skills will impress the woman he loves.

But when the judges discover that some cakes have been tampered with, the villagers' loyalties are called into question - whose ambition would stretch to sabotage, and why?

The Christmas Bake Off is an exclusive short story from Abby Clements, author of Meet Me Under the Mistletoe. This ebook edition also includes bonus recipes for cinnamon cookies and vanilla and almond biscuits.

The best thing about this book being our choice to read, is that you can actually currently pick it up for free on Amazon, you can check that out here

I would love for you all to read along with me so we can all enjoy the book together, so let me know in the comments if you are joining in! Also if you are blogger who wants to get involved then please join our Facebook group, it's never too let to pick up this book and get involved!

Bloggers Kindle Book Club: Revival!

Tuesday, 18 November 2014

You may remember that way back when I decided to start up a Bloggers book club! After a month it all fizzled out, mainly because I was so busy, having just moved into a new place with Tim, and starting a new job.

Fast forward to now and I am feeling 100% more settled, and am ready to pick this up properly now! That's where you come in, I'm looking to recruit more people to get involved in the book club, it's all about having fun, sharing books, and being able to have a good natter together. I'm really excited about it, and I hope you all will be too!

Here's how it should work:

  • Each month everyone will suggest a book for the group to read.
  • We will have a poll to decide which book gets chosen that month.
  • The book will have to be under £5, and available on the Amazon Kindle Store
  • The last Sunday of every month there will be a BKBC chat in the Facebook group that I have created
  • We will use #BKBC on Twitter, so you can follow it on there
  • You are free to blog about your thoughts on the book after the monthly BKBC chat. (so that you don't accidentally share spoilers if others aren't as far ahead as you are!)
So the plan is that we will start reading the next book on the 1st of December. There is currently a post in the Facebook Group, where you can leave suggestions of what book you would like to read. I have suggested that maybe we could read a Christmas themed book, but you can suggest anything you want! Then next week I will be holding a poll so everyone can decide which book they would like to read, the one with the most votes will win! Everyone will have until the beginning of January to finish the book, and then we can all chat about it/write about it together!

If you would like to get involved then please ask to join the Facebook Group, and I can't wait to get started!

Bloggers Kindle Book Club!

Friday, 7 March 2014

I've been reading a lot more frequently recently, and one of my 23 Before 23 goals is to read at least one new book a month, but also, to write about them on this blog. So I thought to myself, what better way to encourage myself to write about the books I read, then to start up a book club!

So here's how I'm hoping this will work:

  • Each month someone will be chosen at random to pick our month's Kindle book.
  • The book will have to be under £5
  • The last Sunday of every month there will be a BKBC chat in the Facebook group that I have created
  • If you want to get involved for the first month then please join the Facebook group!
  • We will use #BKBC on Twitter, so you can follow it on there
  • The book will have to be available on Amazon Kindle.
  • You are free to blog about your thoughts on the book after the monthly BKBC chat. (so that you don't accidentally share spoilers if others aren't as far ahead as you are!)
I've already chosen this month's book so that we can get started as soon as possible, seeing as we've already lost a week. This month's book is:

You can currently pick up the Kindle version of this book for a mere 99p on Amazon! And here's the description:

'During a snowstorm in England in 1910, a baby is born and dies before she can take her first breath.

During a snowstorm in England in 1910, the same baby is born and lives to tell the tale.

What if there were second chances? And third chance? In fact an infinite number of chances to live your life? Would you eventually be able to save the world from it's own inevitable destiny? And would you even want to?

Life after Life follows Ursula Todd as she lives through the turbulent events of the last century again and again. With wit and compassion, Kate Atkinson finds warmth even in life's bleakest moment, and shows an extraordinary ability to evoke the past. Here she is at her most profound and inventive, in a novel that celebrates the best and worst of outselves'

And there you have it! It's that simple, if you want to get involved then check out the Facebook Group, and I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you all!
