As part of my '22 Before 22' list I decided that I wanted to broaden my knowledge of the classics, by reading 5 more before I turn 22. On that list is Wuthering Heights, I managed to pick up a Kindle copy for free from Amazon. I was unaware that you can get the majority of the classic's for free from Amazon but there you go! Anyway before reading I didn't really know a lot about Wuthering Heights. I knew the names Cathy and Heathcliff, I knew something about them rambling on moors, and that it was supposed to be a great love story. This book was certainly a shock to the system. It disappointed me so much, I was in awe of the way that the characters treated each other and I almost wanted to give up half way through. Not to mention that I was severely confused by the way that the story is told in the narrative of a servant. Now don't get me wrong, I did enjoy reading it, but I was just confused because of all the preconceptions that I already had about the story. I expected that I would be confused, as it takes a while for my mind to wrap around the style that the classics are written in. Don't even get me started on the dialogue of the character Joseph, I have literally NO idea what he was saying and ended up skipping the majority of it.
Although I'm glad I finally got around to reading Wuthering Heights, it certainly is never going to be a favourite of mine when it comes to the classics that I have already read. In fact I am fairly certain that 'Emma' by Jane Austen is my favourite of all I have read. I still have four on my list of classics to read before I turn 22, so I had best get a move on! Good on you for reading the classics. I've tried but failed :)
ReplyDeleteI love that book. I've read it a lot. At least once a year. I have the exact copy, among others. I love Wuthering Heights. I hunt down old vintage copies in old book stores. What a great classic book to have just finished :)
ReplyDeleteI am so bad at reading the classics. But I've heard such great things about Wuthering Heights, that I just may need to give it a whirl!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't a fan of Wuthering Heights either, so don't feel bad! My favorite classic would probably be Jane Eyre.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading it in Junior high or hs but the details escape me.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I could commit to reading this book. Good for you
